In the beginning of time, an evil force known as Chaos infested the galaxy. The senshi, protectors of the worlds quickly lost ground in the Sailor Wars, until the strongest senshi sealed Chaos within herself, and rebuilt the galaxy. However, knowing she could not hold Chaos at bay forever, she released her own starseed, the light of hope, into the stars. Its mission: to seek the one who can subdue Chaos, once and for all... In the 10th century, the entire solar system was at peace. It was ruled by the benevolent Queen Serenity, who lived in the moon kingdom on the Sea of Serenity. The palace, and the era, was known as the Silver Millennium... However, it was destined not to stay that way. Evil forces from the Earth, known as the Dark Kingdom, invaded the moon kingdom in hopes that the ginzuishou, or silver crystal, could grant them immortality. The Lunarians were killed, and the kingdom laid to waste... By ultimately sacrificing herself, Queen Serenity was able to trap the evil warriors deep into the Earth, and reincarnate the senshi as humans one thousand years into the future. And so it begins... Sailor Moon (1992) [Milestones] The first season of Sailor Moon was a hit. This season was about the appearance of the senshi and their memories, and their battle against the destroyers of the Silver Millenium. It all starts with an alarm clock. We see our bumbling, simpering heroine named Tsukino Usagi rush to school. Along the way, she meets a weird talking black cat named Luna, who recruits Usagi as the "fighter for love and justice, Sailor Moon" to fight a mysterious evil army, ruled by the disembodied Queen Metalia and her vampire daughter Queen Beryl, known as the Dark Kingdom. Along the way, Sailor Moon finds help in the form of the dashing, yet elusive Tuxedo Kamen, a man who, while having no memories about his past or identity, is subconsciously driven to aid Sailor Moon. Other sailor warriors, or sailor senshi, are also found; the gentle genius Mizuno Ami (Sailor Mercury), the short-fused mystic Hino Rei (Sailor Mars), the rather violent Kino Makoto (Sailor Jupiter) and the loveable actress Aino Minako (Sailor Venus). Near the end, the all-powerful silver crystal, or ginzuishou is found and Usagi discovers she is Princess Serenity, the heir to the throne of the ancient lunar civilization known as the Silver Millennium. Chiba Mamoru also finds out he is Tuxedo Kamen and Serenity's fiancee, Prince Endymion. The senshi are given a chance to see the final, fatal days of this kingdom and see it destroyed by Queen Beryl. Swearing revenge, the senshi are able to defeat Queen Beryl at the North Pole...but with the cost of their lives; however, with Usagi-chan's dying wish, the ginzuishou brings the senshi and Endymion back to life, and they begin to live normal lives once more, lives without battles, magical crystals, or any recollection of the past year's events. Only the cats Luna and Artemis remember what has happened and who they are. This is the end...of the first season. Sailor Moon R (1993) [Milestones] R stands for Returns for Part 1 of this saga and Romance for the second. Unfortunately, SMR turned out only average, most likely due to the monotonous, snail-like plot progression. However, this is the season where we learn about the senshi's future, and they get new attacks (star powers). Usagi and the others are called back into duty when Ail and Ann, a pair of aliens, begins a campaign of draining the humans' energy in order to feed themselves and rejuvenate their life-giving tree, the Makaiju. Ail and Ann masquerade themselves as students at Usagi-chan, Ami-chan and Mako-chan's school and have their own problems fitting in. What's worse, Ail is infatuated with Usagi-chan and Ann has a crush on Mamoru-kun, who has yet to regain his memory. And who exactly is Tsukikage no knight (Moon Shadow Knight), a turban-wearing hero who assists the senshi? Only when the Makaiju, a magical tree that created Ail and Ann's people, awakes and nearly destroys its children Ail and Ann in its fury do they finally understand the concept of love and respect for themselves and others. Mamoru-kun memories are restored (much to Usagi-chan's delight), and Ail and Ann depart Earth, with both couples intent on starting a new life. Then, a precocious little toddler nicknamed Chibi Usa arrives from the future, pretends to be the Tsukinos' distant cousin, and comes searching for the ginzuishou. In hot pursuit are Rubeus and the Black Moon family, who want the child and the crystal for themselves. Led by Wiseman from the planet Nemesis, the Black Moon strive to topple Neo Queen Serenity and 30th century Crystal Tokyo by destroying the city and the senshi within the past. Mamoru-kun also 'dumps' Usagi-chan after having terrible visions of Princess Serenity being killed. The senshi later discover Chibi Usa, now known as Mamoru-kun and Usagi-chan's future daughter, is lured and brainwashed into the Black Lady. With the help of the enigmatic Sailor Pluto, the guardian of time, the senshi journey to the time gate, travel to the future and are able to defeat the Black Moon, destroy Nemesis and return Chibi Usa safely to Neo Queen Serenity. Sailor Moon R The Movie (Spring 1994) [Milestones] This was the first movie, and has always been viewed as an attempted rewrite of SMR's Part 1 (Fiore's similarities to Ail are more than coincidental). Roland Parliament once said SMRM was "one of the finest hours in SM entertainment." This was also the movie where Artemis uses Rei's Windows PC to scan the space seed for life readings! An alien man named Fiore appears and claims to repay Mamoru for his kindness to him when Mamoru-kun was a child. Apparently, Fiore had travelled to Earth when Mamoru was in the hospital recovering from injuries from a car crash which also killed Mamoru-kun's parents. Orphaned and afflicted with amnesia, Mamoru-kun befriended the equally lonely Fiore and gave him a red rose as a farewell gift. However, things are not what they seem, and the senshi discover that Fiore is under the control of a parasitic Kisenian flower, which plans to drain the Earth of its life energy. Tuxedo Kamen is kidnapped by Fiore, and the senshi teleport to his base, a large seed moving through space. There, they encounter the anguished and still-possessed Fiore, who refuses to return Mamoru and claims that Usagi-chan is trying to trick him and Mamoru and tear them apart. However, with Sailor Moon's compassion, the ginzuishou is activated, Fiore sees the light and Kisenian is killed. With Sailor Moon transformed into Princess Serenity, the senshi and Endymion join her in stopping the seed from colliding with the Earth. Sailor Moon S (1994) [Milestones] This was the best season of SM ever (excluding Sailor Stars)! With the appearance of the more demure outer senshi and its strong themes of death and rebirth, it had an irresistable synergy which wowed this reviewer over. "The Silence is coming..." Rei has disturbing visions that the world is about to end. Even more intriguing, daimons led by mad scientist Professor Tomoe and the Witches 5/Death Busters as well as two powerful, mysterious senshi (who are later revealed to be the bull-headed Ten'ou Haruka aka Sailor Uranus, and the artsy Kaiou Michiru aka Sailor Neptune) are stealing people's heart crystals in search of the three talismans, which can summon the omnipotent holy grail and the messiah. Waging war against two opponents, the mission is further complicated by the appearance of Sailor Chibi-Moon, who is Chibi Usa returning from the future for some sailor training, and Sailor Pluto. The senshi discover the three talismans were within Uranus, Neptune and Pluto all along, the Holy Grail appears, and Sailor Moon becomes Super Sailor Moon. Things turn black when Chibi-Usa's life-essential pure heart crystal is stolen and Hotaru, Tomoe's young daughter, is possessed and transforms into the melancholic Hell messiah of devastating power, Mistress Nine. The daimons take over the Maguen Gaken High School in preparation for The Silence, aka Apocalypse, and the senshi attempt to kill Mistress Nine. However, Sailor Moon believes Hotaru is still good, and she gives Mistress Nine the grail. This proves quite foolish, as Mistress Nine then proceeds to use the grail to summon Pharoah 90, an extradimensional being, to conquer the Earth. At that moment, Mistress Nine is exorcised - not by Hotaru, but by Hotaru's sailor identity, Sailor Saturn. Saturn returns Chibi-Usa's heart crystal, resuscitating her, and begins to battle Pharaoh 90. With the grail destroyed from the summoning, Sailor Moon is unable to help, but the strength of the six senshi allows her to miraculously transform into Super Sailor Moon and banish Pharaoh 90. Saturn, seeing the evil in the world and within herself, decides to transform herself into the innocent form of a baby and start life anew. With Sailor Moon revealed as the messiah and The Silence averted, Pluto returns to the time gate, the infant Hotaru is returned to Tomoe, Uranus and Neptune exuent, and the senshi settle back into normal life. Sailor Moon S The Movie (Spring 1995) [Milestones] We see Kamen say "Melly Kurisamasu, an a Hauppy New Ya!" SMSM was a more interesting story than SMRM, and had a few surprises too. While the senshi celebrate the Christmas season, an astronomer named Kakeru spots a object fall to earth. Unbeknownst to him, the object is an ice crystal, which grows into an icy fortress when put in contact with water. He scoops this curious find from a local pond and keeps it. The next day, he saves a sick Luna from an intersection and takes her home to treat her. While at his home, she learns of the crystal, which seems to be giving him chest pains, and the decaying relationship between him and his practical girlfriend, who finds his beliefs in Kaguya Hime, the moon goddess from an old Japanese legend, childish. Instrumental to the evil Princess Snow Kaguya in freezing the Earth in ice, Snow Kaguya comes to Earth to find the crystal while her snow dancers immobilize the citizens of Tokyo in ice. All nine senshi (sans Saturn) are present and stop their reign of terror. Luna is found the next day, but then returns to Kakeru's home, after growing rather fond of him. Unfortunately, the crystal is still giving him chest pains, and his condition worsens. The ice princess later reclaims the crystal from the ailing astronomer and she is able to build her stronghold and slowly engulf the world in ice and snow. The senshi are defeated, unable to hold back the waves upon waves of marauding snow dancers. As a last resort, Sailor Moon turns into Princess Serenity and, with the help of the others, uses Silver Crystal Power, an ancient Sailor Planet Power-like attack that Queen Serenity herself used to trap Snow Kaguya thousands of years ago. Snow Kaguya is still able to repel this with her ice beam, and a DBZ-esque fireball pushing faceoff ensues. Meanwhile, Serenity thinks to herself about Luna, and wishes Luna could express her feelings for Kakeru-kun. The ginzuishou picks up her thoughts...and Luna transforms into Kaguya Hime, the moon goddess. She heals Kakeru-kun and they ascend into space. The astronomer recognizes Luna, and Luna tells him to reconcile with his girlfriend. At the end, Snow Kaguya is overwhelmed by the senshi's combined power and is killed, Kakeru rejoins with his girlfriend, and Luna, a cat once more, returns to Artemis and the senshi. Image: Princess Snow Kaguya mockingly watches Sailor Moon begin Silver Crystal Power Sailor Moon SuperS (1995) [Milestones] This was inarguably the worst season of SM. The villains were insipid, the plots were weak and anti-climatic compared to SMS, and the whole thing was about Chibi Usa. However, Uranus and Neptune thankfully make a cameo, and the inner senshi acquire crystal power attacks. This was also the only season where all the villains didn't die (Zirconia, Neherenia's avatar, doesn't count); they either escaped or repented. As the Dead Moon enters this dimension, Chibi-Usa and the senshi give refuge to a winged unicorn named Pegasus within Chibi-Usa's dreams. Hot in pursuit are Zirconia and the Dead Moon Circus, who begin searching Tokyo's citizens' dream mirrors for the anicorn. Along the way, Diana, Luna and Artemis's daughter from the future, arrives to assist Chibi-Usa, and Pegasus reveals himself to be Elios, a man who is hiding the golden crystal, disguised as his horn, from the Dead Moon. The golden crystal is the Golden Millennium (Earth)'s equivalent to the ginzuishou. After many failed attempts, the leader, Neherenia, decides to exit her dreamworld and go to Earth herself. Once there, she traps the world in a spider's web, and the Dead Moon eclipses the moon. With the Earth under attack, Mamoru-kun also succumbs. Chibi-Moon is kidnapped, her dream mirror extracted and Neherenia obtains the golden crystal. However, the Amazoness Quartet, four villainesses working for Neherenia, rebel and give the crystal back. With the help of the children of Tokyo, Chibi-Moon destroys the web. Defeated, Neherenia takes Chibi-Moon and lifts her base skywards. There, Sailor Moon sees Neherenia as her aunt -rapidly aging, without the dreamworld's powers. Neherenia returns to her dreams to remain young - after throwing Chibi-Moon off the building! With the help of Princess Serenity, the golden crystal and Pegasus, she is saved from certain doom. At the end, Elios and the Quartet leave, but the Quartet promises to return. Image: "Onegai, Pegasus!" Chibi-Moon summons Pegasus in battle [SMSS] Sailor Moon SuperS The Movie (Spring 1996) [Milestones] The latest movie to the Sailor Moon legacy, SMSSM is actually an adaptation from a manga story about the return of the Death Buster daimons; the Dream Hole was Pharaoh 90 and Badiyernu his wife. Children are being charmed and kidnapped, Pied Piper style, all over the world! The inner senshi confront one of the pixies, Pupran, when he strikes Tokyo. After losing a battle with the Bonbon Babies - demons in the form of ricocheting rock candies - Chibi Usa is taken and Kamen is mortally wounded. However, they find an unlikely ally in the form of Pelulu, a defected pixie and Chibi Usa's newfound friend. He takes them in his flying ship to the enemy base in the clouds. Unfortunately, the enemy had been expecting the senshi, and the ship is shot down and crash lands. The senshi are immediately pitched into battle with Pupran and his comrades Orangea and Bananu, who summon Bonbon babies by the dozens with their flutes. It seems hopeless, until a yellow energy ball blasts some of the Babies away... It is the outer three senshi, who have been independently pursuing the trail of dark energy! Uranus and Neptune use their talisman attacks and Mars her Flame Sniper to destroy the flutes, and the trio are vaporized. Travelling into the deep bowels of Magipan Castle, the eight senshi meet the 50 ft tall Badiyernu, who is sucking the children's energy in order to engulf the world in the Black Dream Hole, a growing black sphere. Sailor Moon resolutely jumps into the sphere to fight Badiyernu. With the combined powers of the others, she revives Chibi-Moon. With matching kaleid-moon scopes, they blast their way through the Black Dream Hole, which promptly implodes. With the children saved, Pelulu gives Chibi Usa his flute as a gift, she kisses him on the cheek, and he flies away. Sailor Moon SuperS Plus: Ami-chan no Hatsukoi There is also a hilarious 16 min. episode-style mini-movie that showed concurrently called "Ami's First Love". Ami becomes engrossed with beating "Mercurius", an academic rival, and a youma decides to drain her of love energy by exposing her desires for him. Unfortunately, Ami thinks Mercurius is a youma, and destroys her. But the inner senshi keep Mercurius's identity a secret...because he looks just like Umino. (Yes, a very ticked off Ami-chan does say "F*** you" to the youma from the uncut version from the first day, which was quickly censored.) Sailor Stars (1996) [Milestones] With a new theme song (Sailor Star Song), new title ("Sailor Moon" is relegated to the subtitle), the appearance of the Sailor Starlights and the reappearance of the outer four senshi, Sailor Stars promises to be a bolder, different Sailor Moon. By bucking the formulaic actions, Sailor Stars is the most fast-paced and suspenseful SM to date. Once again, Pluto's foresight is correct, as a mysterious aurora frees Neherenia and gives her the strength to exact vengeance. Mamoru-kun and many others are possessed by Neherenia. However, the reunited ten senshi are worthy challengers; the reawakened Saturn gives Sailor Moon her ultimate form - Eternal Sailor Moon - to first fight Neherenia's teratoys and then Sailor Galaxia and her anima-mates, the most dangerous villain to date. The Sailor Starlights, the sportish Kou Seiya(Sailor Star Fighter), the scholarly Kou Taiki(Sailor Star Maker) and the squeamish Kou Yaten(Sailor Star Healer) also appear. Disguised as the male rock group "Three Lights", they sing songs with subliminal messages designed to be picked up by their lost Princess Kakyu. However, Mamoru, while on a plane, has disappeared...and a small girl named Chibi Chibi has joined the Tsukino family. Sailor Moon and Star Fighter wish to join forces, but the other Starlights and the outer senshi (Serenity's guards against alien invaders) refuse to cooperate. However, Galaxia is obsessed on destruction and conquest, and finding the last of the galaxy's star seeds. Once Chibi Chibi makes Kakyu appear, the Starlights decide to hold a final Three Lights concert to trap Galaxia. However, Galaxia proves to be nearly invincible, stopping all their powers with a single hand. Princess Kakyu's starseed is taken and is killed, and the world is engulfed in darkness. The senshi join the mourning Starlights in a showdown at the TV station, but even they can't stop the onslaught. The four guardians are killed instantaneously. The outer senshi try to attack in waves; failing miserably, Uranus and Neptune submit themselves as anima-mates, their starseeds placed in controlling bracelets, and kill Pluto and Saturn. We learn Neherenia was only a pawn, used to lure Saturn and the outers - and their star seeds - out of hiding. Uranus and Neptune try to take Galaxia's starseed, ending their ruse, but fail - Galaxia's starseed is missing! For their betrayal, they are also killed. In a final sword battle between Princess Serenity and Galaxia-turned-Chaos, Serenity and Chibi Chibi, Galaxia's starseed, manage to free Galaxia from the evil Chaos. Peace is restored; the inner guardians, the outer senshi, Endymion, Chibi Chibi, Kakyu and the rest of the galaxy's senshi are all brought back to life. The grateful Starlights depart to colonize a new world, and the senshi are free to pursue their dreams and goals once more. And what of Chaos? A bit of Chaos is in all of our hearts now, and it is up to all of us to keep it in check, for the sake of world peace.
